John, identified as "the elder" writes to "the chosen lady and her children," most likely a house church in Ephesus.
Love and truth are friends. John rejoices in hearing that some of her children are walking in truth. He asks them to love one another.
2 John 1:5-6 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.Deceivers do not confess Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Those following false teaching will follow great spiritual loss. John warns that the congregation should not welcome false teachers or give them a platform to establish their wicked work.
John plans to visit them soon - he would rather say it in person hoping both his joy and their joy will be complete.
He conveys the greetings form the children of their elect sister.
